WD-40 to Remove Rug and Carpet Pad from Hardwood, Wood Floor

Many people often call and ask us how to remove a stuck rug or carpet pad from a hardwood or hard floor. With all the lower quality rug pads available, this problem of a rug pad sticking to and marking the floor has become a common issue.

We recently received a call from a customer on the west coast who ordered some of our rug pads because her existing ones damaged her floor. She offered some excellent advice to anyone who is dealing with their rug pad leaving marks or a gluey like substance on their floor. She used WD-40, the popular lubricant made mainly of mineral spirits, and this was able to remove all the mess caused by the faulty rug pad.

We already know that paint thinner can work to remove rug pad marks from floors but it can also remove the floor finish. The WD-40 did not have any harmful effects to the floor at all. What this customer did once the rug pad was removed is to wash the floor with Murphys Oil Soap. This brought the floor back to the original look and feel and removed any odor that may have been left by the WD-40.

The types of rug pads that leave this problem on floors are usually the non slip ones with holes in them that are sold at the big box stores and some carpet stores. These rug pads are sprayed with an adhesive to give them a tacky feel and it is this adhesive that can transfer to your floor. There are many people who think that rubber rug pads are not safe for hardwood or wood floors. I hear this often and I thought to share some facts on rubber rug pads.

The reason for a rubber rug pad, besides protecting your rug and floor, is to prevent slipping. There are many rug pads that we think are rubber but are actually a rubber like substance. Those waffle looking rug pads you see in the big bix stores are usually made of some sort of pvc, nylon or polyester with an adhesive sprayed on them that can rub off onto your floor.

Rubber is a natural product and when used the right way to make a rug pad, is perfectly safe for all types of hard floors. The nature of rubber is to dry out over time, not stick to your floor. What differentiates how long a rubber pad will take to dry is the amount of rubber used in the rug pad.

Our Ultra Premium non slip rug pad is made with a felt jute surface and a solid layer of rubber lower surface. There are 20 ounces of rubber per square yard of rug pad in this pad and this is a quality rubber rug pad. A large part of the orders at Rug Pad Corner are based on custom sizes and shapes of rug pads. We truly cut each order, whether is it a standard 9'x12' rug pad or a special size or shape, upon receipt of the order. This allows us to cater to a customer's rug and many customers have special rug sizes or shapes.

We recently received a few orders for custom rug pads. One was for a 23'6'" round area rug in California and the other for a 16'x27' rug in Texas. It was to each customer's surprise that we were able to accommodate their requests and we did so in a timely fashion.

One thing I realized from customers is that many people have the misconception that they will receive their custom rug pad in a few pieces. I discovered that this is their thought due to what they have heard from other stores. The fact is, a custom rug pad should be cut to the exact specifications of the rug it is ordered for and delivered as one piece, not several pieces of rug pad to be put together in the home. Since our rug padding rolls are 12' wide, any rug wider than that will have a rug pad made up of more than one piece. As for attaching the pieces together, that is what we do before we ship it. What Size Rug Pad do I Need?

I often hear the question of "What size rug pad should I get?". The answer is a clear one. Every rug pad should be cut a little less than the actual rug size. This is true for a few reasons.

First, a rug pad should be smaller than your rug size because we want the edges of your rug to fall flat to the floor. This eliminates any risk of tripping on the edge of your rug. This also eliminates any premature wear to the edges of your rug from being caught on heels of shoes. The edges of your area rug should always lie flat to the floor.

Next, a rug pad should be smaller than your rug because we don't want to walk into a room and see the rug pad sticking out. It looks much cleaner and more finished to hide the rug pad.

The rug pad should be anywhere from one to two inches less on all sides than the edges of your rug. If your rug measures 8'x10', then your rug pad should measure about 7'10"x9'10". This is one inch less on all four sides or two inches in total in each dimension.

If you have ever had to cut a rug pad, you may have a story to tell! Frankly, the only rug pad that may not give you much trouble to cut is the thinner non slip rug pads with holes. Any other type of solid rug pad is quite difficult to cut at home. Not only do you need the proper cutting tool, but you must also take care not to cut the rug, damage the floor or cut your fingers!

One thing we always advise us customers is to give us their actual rug size when they order a rug pad. It is not the customer's job to receive a quality rug pad and then deal with cutting it to their rug size. That is our job and we want the rug pad to arrive ready to open up and use.

This helps because when rugs are walked on, the back, or the knots of the rugs, wear against the hard floor. This takes away from the life of the rug. When the right rug pad is under the rug, the pad now takes the wear and acts as a middle barrier between the rug and the floor. This wear absorbtion by the pad prolongs the life of all area rugs.
